B is for Basilisk: These powerful poisonous lizards have a stare that can kill. Don’t despair these creatures can no longer be found anywhere.

C is for Centaur: A Centaur is a creature that is half man half horse. In Greek mythology, one Centaur stands out from all the rest. Cheiron is known for his teaching abilities. He once taught the great Hercules.

D is for Dragon: Dragons are dastardly creatures. They steal damsels and sit in their lairs on piles of gold. Just waiting for a knight to come along and scold. That is how it goes for dragons in the many stories that are told.

E is for Elf: Elves are pointy eared helpful fair folk. They build, create and stay up late. Whether they are helping the shoemaker or Santa at the North Pole, their helpfulness can’t be undersold.

F is for Fairies: Fairies are the most famous of all the Fairfolk. Similar to elves fairies like to help. Can you think of some famous fairies you know? How about the blue one who helped a puppet stay honest and true? I bet one has come by to collect a tooth from you.

G is for Ghost: Ghosts can be friendly like Casper or helpful and gnarly like Jacob Marley who came back from the grave to help is friend Ebenezer, be a better person. Some ghosts live in old houses that need a serious dusting. If these ghosts become a bother I bet, we all know who to call to do some busting.

H is for Hydra: The nine-headed hydra was not a nice guy. So as one of Hercules labors Zeus asked him to make the Hydra go bye bye.

I is for Imp: These attention-seeking pranksters mean you no harm. Friendship is what they seek. The imp is a small relative to the goblin. Their jokes are supposed to be fun, but they make most people just want to run run run.

J is for Jinn: The Jinn is the original name for a genie. It was a genie who help Aladdin win the heart of a maiden so fair, and helped Ali Baba defeat 40 thieves without a care.

K is for Kraken: The Kraken is a large sea monster in Greek mythology similar to a Squid. It is said it roamed once near Norway and Greenland calling the waters of these shores its home. It comes up from the deep to attack ships who interrupted its sleep.

L is for Leprechaun: The lucky little leprechauns don’t you know. They always know where the wealth grows. This is in the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

M is for Mermaid: A mermaid is half human half fish in mythology that swims under the sea. Christopher Columbus thought he once saw one, but he was wrong. In reality, he saw an animal off of which all mermaids are based, this real world animal is named the Manatee.

N is for Nemean Lion: This lion from Greek mythology is the ultimate king of beasts. This lion could stalk any prey. With its razor sharp claws and resilient hide. The lion seemed unbeatable to say the least that is until Hercules turned him into a feast.

O is for Ogre: The Ogre is seen as a big slow mean brute. This is just not true. They just seem that way because they have not had their morning brew. They are just very keen to have the elixir that comes from the coffee bean.

P is for Phoenix: The Phoenix is a bird born from fire. Through its life, it flies reaching ever greater heights. Some myths say the Phoenix will live 14 centuries and a day. Then like the sun from which it once came, the Phoenix starts to catch fire starting with just a flame. This fire consumes the bird till there is nothing left but ash. Do not cry for this magnificent bird is not gone, it will rise from the ash and once again be on the rise spreading its wings and taking to the skies.

Q is for Quetzalcoatl: As I am sure the reader knew very few mythical creatures start with the letter Q. So since moving on is what we must do. Let the author introduce an Aztec god to you. Quetzalcoatl is the god of wind and learning. A winged serpent. One of his many jobs in the stories of old is helping his peoples’ crops grow.

R is for Raven: The Raven in some native American cultures was seen as a trickster who just wanted to have some fun. Other cultures like the ancient Romans saw the Raven as a sign of gloom and doom. The Raven even caused a poet to lock himself in a room and behind a closed door say “quote the raven, nevermore.”

S is for Sandman: Who knows what dreams may come? The Sandman knows. Working through the wee hours of the night. The Sandman helps children fall asleep and dream throughout the night.
